“Stick and Rudder”

Original illustration
by Joe Jones.

This was the trainer plane in which almost all WWII Army Air Corps and Navy aviators first earned their wings. As I am currently working on my pilots license myself, I wanted to simply capture the thrill and freedom of flight itself in this striking new illustration.

Created by suggestion of Boeing's Museum of Flight, this Stearman actually still flies out of their airfield in Seattle. Recognized to be still one of the safest planes ever built, hundreds have survived the test of time and are still flying to this day. Very much like a time machine, through my process of research we had the rare opportunity to fly in a 1943 Stearman ourselves. I'll tell you, here's nothing quite as exciting as sailing through the heavens strapped into an open cockpit airplane such as a Stearman!

If you have any interest in aviation and flying yourself, we encourage you to start by contacting your local EAA chapter. You can find your local chapters through the Web at: eaa.org.
