This is an attempt to determine statistically the text
rendering size on various platforms and in various browsers. The
upper-case "M" above is set by style sheet to 72 points:
font { font-size: 72pt; }
The theory is that a 72pt "M" should, in an ideal world, be rendered
on screen at approximately 1" by 1". In reality, however, every
platform/monitor/browser combination renders text at very different
sizes. As a web designer, I'd very much like to know how big
my type is displaying on different systems.
I invite everyone to pull out a ruler or tape measure, measure the
full display area of your monitor, measure the letter "M", and
enter your data in the form. If you have access to more than one
system, by all means run this test on all of them, but only
enter data once for each system so you don't skew the average.
Be sure to measure the useable area of your monitor, not
the full exposed glass of the screen.
If you want to see the current stats, and you've already entered
the data for your system, you can view the data
here.
I am outputting the data in a graph composed of a table with
100 rows of 100 columns. On my old 14.4 modem, this table
disconnects me for some reason. If anyone else experiences this
problem let me know, I'll come up with another method.
Thanks for your help!
